Just a Dollop Video Kickoff

Rachel earns a microphone for her funny comments!

Team 209 had our first opportunity in April to videotape the ladies preparing their healthy recipes. We are all excited to begin sharing this experience with our friends! Welcome to the first Blog post on our Just A Dollop  Website. Ashley shares her thoughts on the planning process and her dream for Just A Dollop!

Sharon: What were you looking forward to when Ryan said he would be able to videotape you and your roommates cooking for Just a Dollop?

Ashley: Seeing how I look on camera, seeing how the products turn out and trying new recipes. My roommates are very supportive and helpful,  taking directions and listening to what I need, giving me the right things and reading the recipes to me to make sure I have all of the right ingredients and the right utensils. They help me so I have everything that I need and they are ready so when I need something I can ask for it.

Sharon: How did you prepare for the videotaping session?

Ashley: I Made sure everything was clean and ready to use. Gina helped us to  make sure that aprons, shirts are clean and not dirty. She also made sure that we have all of the right ingredients.

Sharon: How did you decide what recipes to use?

Ashley: We talked about it, then picked some of our favorites.

Sharon: How did you figure out what to say?

Ashley: We each took turns speaking and voicing our thoughts. Ryan helped us talk through things and Gina was coaching us as well.

Sharon: How did Gina help?

Meet the Queen of our Kitchen, our Nutrition Coach - Gina

Ashley: Gina helped when we did not know what step we were on. She stepped in when we needed her,  like when we measure so we are using the right measuring cups or measuring spoons and she also comes in if I need to turn the heat up or down so I do not burn what I am cooking or baking.

Sharon: How did you practice with your roommates?

Ashley: Gina got all of us in Rachel's room for a pep talk and told us what we were going to be making. We each took turns talking and sharing thoughts.

Sharon: Talk about what Erika’s part was?

Ashley: Erika is our food safety person, she helps with proper hand washing information and talks about wearing gloves when handling raw meats and to make sure to wash your hands often.

Erika talks about the importance of safety in the kitchen.

Ashley tells me about the materials needed ….

Sharon: What did you need to have ready to use for videotaping?

Ashley: We need to have all of the equipment, all of the ingredients,  measuring spoons,  measuring cups, bowls, and spoons.

Sharon: Did you use a script?

Ashley: No, I just talk and the day before we went over what we were going to be making. Gina helped to make sure we have all of the ingredients and the right measuring cups/spoons that we need ready to go.

Sharon: What did you wear?

Ashley: Just A Dollop  shirt, an apron, and a chefs hat so when we cook we do not get ourselves dirty or wet.

Ashley talks about the process and working together….

Sharon: Talk about how you decided what to say?

Ashley: We were coached mostly by Gina and Ryan.

Sharon: What experiences have you had that made this hard or easy?

Ashley: I worked with Ryan before so when they do not understand what I am saying,  it is easy to tell him what I needed. Sometimes it is hard to explain to people when they do not know what I need or what to do.

Sharon: How did you like working with your team, roommates, and Ryan?

Ashley: Ryan is so helpful. He explains when we need to talk into the  microphone.  Working with roommates can be easy but sometimes hard when they do not get what they want. Sometimes they take it out on me but we are all in this team together.

Ashley shares her final thoughts….

Sharon: How did Ryan help you during videotaping ?

Ashley: He helped by zooming in for close ups for the food, he also helped by coaching us on what to say and what to do.

Sharon: What was your favorite part of making the cooking videos?

Ashley: Seeing the finished products , seeing ourselves on the screen, and trying out the food when it is done.

Sharon: How do you think this can help other people with disabilities?

Ashley: Making sure that the recipes are simple and not too hard to follow along. If they are hard we need to make adjustments. (Maybe reminders) If there is a sharp knife, make sure to have help with it.

Sharon: What is your dream for Just a Dollop

Ashley: To make a cookbook and dedicate it to my parents and grandma!
